With the First World Environment being celebrated on 5th June 1974 with the theme ‘Only one Earth. It was celebrated to raise the awareness regarding safeguarding the natural resources and protecting Earth from further harm.
In 1987, the UN decided to rotate the host country for the celebrations of this day. Pakistan will act as the global host of the day in 2021 in collaboration with the UN Environment Programme (UNEP). The theme for this year is ‘Reimagine. Recreate. Restore‘, as 2021 marks the beginning of the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration. The decade starting from 2021 to 2030 will mark the goal to reach sustainable development as a practice for man to co-exist with nature.
In the celebration of World environment day 143 countries participate. The journey of the celebration has been quite inspiring to raise awareness and include more and more people and directing them towards the common goal of sustainability. The theme of 2010 ‘Many species, one planet, one future’ proposed a holistic idea that human beings not only need to establish harmony with the environment but also value the other species of plants and animals and need to save them before they perish or extinct.
The idea behind the theme of ‘Ecosystem restoration’ is a realisation that the world is having with the corona outbreak. If the habitats of man and animals are not stretched then in future, we may face many such pandemics and other natural disasters. Climate change and sea level rise is also a huge concern for the nations around the world. The recent cyclones in India Tauktae, yaas, amphan etc. originating from the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea happened because of the climate change and in future such calamities will only increase in frequency.
The hope for a better tomorrow is comes from the awareness we make today. Climate change, loss of forest covers, bush fire, glacier depletion and pathogen attacks are no more text book concepts or a scientific anticipation. It is the reality that is facing the humanity and has raised the survival question for every person living in the world.
Man, today has accomplished to land on Mars and moon but is still helpless when life is engulfed by the natural disasters. From the stone age to the age of technology man has travelled a long way and in this journey he has exploited the Earth and other animals to fulfil all needs and luxuries before its too late to go back with this agenda of 2021. Lets join our hands to restore the earth make it green and form a healthier environment for the present and future generations.
